Egyptians began working with hard stone very early in their history. They made it into ceremonial utensils, stelae and statues. The earliest major examples of Egyptian stoneworking include three magnificent four-meter high statues of the god Min from the town of Coptos. Min was worshiped as a creator-god and a lord of the Eastern Desert.
